Indian Maritime University (IMU) announces Registrations for IMU-CET 2023 & Admission to IMU programmes AY 2023-24
Chennai, May 10th 2023: Indian Maritime University (IMU) held a press meet on 10th May 2023 to announce and create awareness about the admission process of IMU and also shared information regarding the programmes offered by IMU. Dr. Malini V Shankar, Vice Chancellor of IMU, gave a brief history about the origins of this Central University after the merger of seven institutes with a legacy of more than 70 years to provide quality maritime education, training, and research.
IMU has its headquarters in Chennai. IMU has six campuses located in Chennai, Kochi, Kolkata, Nerul- Navi Mumbai, Sewri- Mumbai, and Vishakhapatnam. 17 Maritime Training Institutes are currently affiliated with IMU.
Admission notification for Academic Year 2023-24 for IMU-CET was published on 14.04.2023.
Speaking at the press meet, Dr. Malini V Shankar, Vice Chancellor, said “The birth of Indian Maritime University is a long-cherished dream of the maritime community of India. The Indian Maritime University, established through an Act of Parliament (Act 22) as a Central University, is poised to play a key role in the development of trained human resources for the maritime sector. IMU offers both marine programmes and non-marine programmes.”
The Marine programmes at the Undergraduate level, such as B.Tech. (Marine Engineering), B.Sc. (Nautical Science), and Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS), would be suitable for students who are aspiring for a career on-board a ship as Captain, Second Officer, or Third Officer (for the navigation side) or as the Chief Engineer of the Ship (for the ship engine side). The non-marine programmes at the undergraduate level, such as B. Tech. (Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering) and B.B.A. (Logistics, Retail, and e-Commerce), would be suitable for students aspiring for a career as a naval architect, Ship Designer or Ship Maintenance engineer, Maritime logistics Manager or in Port management areas. IMU offers Post Graduate and Research programmes for students who would like to aspire to higher education in the above-mentioned fields.
IMU has started the programme BBA-MARITIME LOGISTICS from AY 2022-23 in Visakhapatnam Campus. The students of BBA-MARITIME LOGISTICS are provided with Apprenticeship. In the third year of this programme, the students get a monthly stipend of Rs 7000 through Apprenticeship Act, 1961 – NAPS.
The Vice Chancellor informed the press that in order to encourage more women cadets in the maritime field, IMU has recently signed an MoU with M/s BW Global LPG Pvt. Ltd. for scholarships to 50 deserving girl cadets of IMU and another MoU with Capt. KN Ramesh of MARTRADE for KRA Narasiah Merit Awards to the best Engine and Deck cadets of IMU Chennai Campus. M/s BW Global LPG Pvt Ltd had previously granted scholarships to 26 girl cadets of IMU.
Dr. Malini V Shankar enlightened about the growth story of Maritime Sector in India by highlighting the enormous opportunities envisaged in coming years under Maritime India Vision 2030 and Sagarmala initiatives under the able guidance of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the Hon’ble Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal.
Mr. K Saravanan, Registrar IMU, Dr. Rajoo Balaji, Dean (i/c) CTR Department and Director-IMU Chennai Campus, Commodore KD Joshi (retd.) IN, Controller of Examinations-IMU, and Mr. M Saravanan, Finance Officer IMU, were present during the Press Meet.
After giving an initial briefing about the Maritime Sector and the programmes offered by IMU, the forum was declared open for queries. There were queries related to placements, future prospects, and life at sea for a seafarer.
After the queries, Shri K Saravanan, Registrar-IMU, proposed a vote of thanks to all media agencies who were present and requested them they give wide publicity to Indian Maritime University and the admission prospects.
